Dancing dervishes
Single-page drawing on a detached album folio. Ink on paper, dated 1620 approx. 32.4 x 22 cm. Two dancers dressed in goat skins (lower left) cavort while another pair in high, conical hats dance and gesticulate. The figures are accompanied by two drummers, a tambourine (daf) player and a piper with pan pipes. Persia, Isfahan, Safavid period.

King Bahram and the Princess of Europe
Drawing, manuscript illumination, miniature, 1650. The pavillion of the Seven Princesses (Haft Peykar) was written on 1197 by Nezami. It relates the story of king Bahram, who had built seven pavillions, one for each Pricess of a different region of the world.

Engelbert Kaempfer Recreational scene of two men dancing
Single-page painting on an album folio, ink and opaque watercolour on paper, dated 1684, 21.4 x 29.9 cm. When he was in Ispahan in 1684-85 the German doctor Engelbert Kaempfer had an album compiled of his own local drawings and paintings by local artists.
