Opaque watercolour on paper, 1820 approx. 21.6 x 32 cm. The beardless boy, perhaps a eunuch, has shorter hair than the girls and a fur hat with a crown similar to some found in 18th-century paintings. In 19th-century Iran, large-scale oil paintings on canvas and album paintings with no narrative content proliferated. Female dancers and musicians who in earlier eras would have been depicted performing for a prince and his retinue or family, now were shown alone.

single-page painting mounted on album folio. Ink and opaque watercolour on paper, dated 1842, 18.3 x 11.3 cm. A dancer with raised arms wears a transparent pink blouse which stops short of her bright orange skirt and reveals her breasts and belly. Over her blouse is a short green flowered jacket. A yellow veil is draped from a red and white striped cap adorned with a feather and jewels. Album contains 19 paintings of Persian costumes.
